White Pine

ONĘˀDAGÓ:WAH

White Pine

Pinus Strobus

Family: Pinaceae

Native tree

There are many medicines that come from White Pine, one of the most well-known is a cough remedy which comes from the pitch. Like Shagbark Hickory (Onę́nǫga:ˀgó:wah), Onęˀdagó:wah has the “gó:wah” word for “great” given to it, both for the medicine it gives and for the history we as Hodinǫhsǫ́:nih have with the tree. This is the tree that stands in the middle of our flag and symbolizes the strength we gained in making peace with each other. We say that the shade Onęˀdagó:wah casts is a peaceful blessing from the tree. The Tree of Peace only continues to stand as long as we tend to it. Making peace is an ongoing responsibility for each of us.
