Tompkins Green Energy Network (T-GEN)
Introducing T-GEN
The Town of Ithaca is thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of Tompkins Green Energy Network (T-GEN). T-GEN is an intermunicipal program, of which the Town is a member alongside the City of Ithaca with other municipalities in the Tompkins region invited to join.
T-GEN is administered by Local Power LLC, and consists of two complimentary but legally separate services.
The first is called Community Choice Aggregation or CCA. CCA is an option for the Town to purchase electricity and natural gas from competitive suppliers with the goal of meeting or beating the current supply price while providing greater price stability. While T-GEN is an intermunicipal program, the CCA programs for the Town and City are currently being administered separately. This service is regulated by the Public Service Commission of New York State.
The second service is called “Own Your Power”, with the goal of creating a simpler, more affordable process for energy users themselves, including renters and home-owners, to electrify households and generate electricity on-site using renewable energy systems that will be owned by the energy users themselves. This service is authorized by and will be subject to oversight by the municipal government.
The process will involve robust public education and outreach, which residents can expect to begin in February 2026.
