East Shore Drive Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety Corridor Project
This project will develop a feasibility study for a capital project to improve the safety for pedestrians and bicyclists and develop designs to link existing multi-use trail infrastructure on approximately 700’ of East Shore Drive (NYS-34) between Boynton Middle School (N. Cayuga Street) and the Ithaca Youth Bureau (James L. Gibbs Dr.) This is a key corridor providing an important link to Stewart Park and the Cayuga Waterfront Trail for walkers, joggers, and cyclists of all ages and from various City of Ithaca neighborhoods, as well nearby Town of Ithaca and Village of Cayuga Heights neighborhoods. The corridor is also an important and busy transportation route for cars and trucks, including the location of on- and off-ramps for NYS-13 with access to NYS-34. No bicycle infrastructure currently exists within the corridor. This project will advance the Better Bike Network’s Key Project A1: Build NY Route 13 Underpass Shared-Use Trail. A special thanks to Assemblymember Dr. Anna R. Kelles for support of the feasibility study.
Progress To Date
Consulting engineers Barton & Loguidice, D.P.C. and surveyors Erdman Anthony have visited the site and met with City of Ithaca, Town of Ithaca, Ithaca-Tompkins County Transportation Council, and New York State Department of Transportation staff. The knowledge gained from their time in Ithaca — along with extensive background research and transportation design standards — will inform the development of three schematic alternative plans.
What Happens Next?
The Town will periodically update this website with information, and there are a few different methods you can use to monitor this or any other website. With Google Alerts, you can enter the URL of the website you want to monitor and then choose how often you want to receive updates. Google Alerts will then send you an email whenever it detects new content on the website. Another option is to use a web-based RSS reader like Feedly. With this method, you simply add the RSS feed of the website you want to monitor to your Feedly account.
